The majority of local people support plans for a new primary school in Cringleford. The purpose built premises on Roundhouse Park would cater for twice as many pupils. The Governors at Cringleford CE VA Primary say the existing building is “past its sell-by date.” But some worry the move will take the heart out of the village.

Chair of Governors, Mark Palmer said at a meeting for parents, that “the approach of patch, mend and make do… is not viable for the C21st.” The school is being offered the opportunity to move across the other side of the dual carriageway. He urged parents to look towards the future, and to embrace the plan to build a brand new school.

The proposal would see a completely new building at Roundhouse Park, which would cater for double the current number of pupils, aged 4-11. Of those who have given their responses to the consultation so far, 77% support the plans. Some worry that losing the school will take the heart out of the old village; others worry about a safe route to school, given the dual carriageway.

The Governors are keen to stress that this is a “once in a lifetime opportunity”, as the developers of Roundhouse Park will fund some of the construction costs. Andy Mash, the Diocesan Director of Education, and Governor at the school said: “Parents and residents should be reassured that this is a genuine consultation”. All current parents and residents from the surrounding area have until November 27th 2009 to submit their views. He added: “This will be more than just a school, it’ll be a hub for the whole community.”
