Action against dangerous dogs

A petition against aggressive dogs on a local estate has gathered over 350 signatures.

Three pets have been mauled by uncontrolled dogs and two died as a result.

Today, local MP Simon Wright added his support.

The petition was organised by John Cena, his wife and some of their neighbours. A greyhound was attacked and a Yorkshire terrier killed last year. A kitten was also killed. The residents claim a Staffordshire bull terrier, roaming without a lead, was responsible. They are also concerned for the safety of young children in the area.

The Liberal Democrat MP for Norwich South met with them today. In the petition they state: “We want owners of the dogs to behave responsibly, with all the dogs in built up areas on leads and controlled in the appropriate manner. We want people and their pets to be able to go outside without the fear of being attacked.”

Simon Wright commented: “I was horrified to hear from the residents that they’ve witnessed irresponsible dog owners actually encouraging their dogs to behave aggressively and to pursue other people’s pets. They told me that a number of residents feel terrified on behalf of their pets, and this is simply unacceptable.”

It is an offence to allow a dog to be dangerously out of control in a public place. A Home Office consultation on how to tackle anti-social behaviour, including dangerous dogs is underway.

The MP will be writing to the city council to highlight the residents’ concerns. Anyone who would like to sign the petition can call into Simon Wright’s constituency office at 2 Douro Place.

Would it not be better to introduce a law saying that all dogs regardless of breed should be on a lead in all public places except designated areas. Its not just Bull terriers which cause this problem.
