In the early 1900s, Jeremiah Colman bought a 3,500 year old mummy shroud, along with over 200 other Egyptian artifacts. The shroud is now part of the Castle Museum collection, alongside a mummy gifted by George V.
The stories behind the collection will be explored in a series of talks at the RC cathedral throughout October.

The talks include 3,500-year-old hieroglyphs found on the shroud and details of an unexpected discovery when the Castle’s mummy, Ankh Hor, was x-rayed at the old Norfolk and Norwich Hospital.
“The Castle holds some fascinating ancient Egyptian artefacts – most of them genuine and just a few now known to be fakes,” said Faye Kalloniatis, Research Associate working on the Egyptian Collection at Norwich Castle Museum. “The stories behind many of them are intriguing: Jeremiah Colman, renowned for his mustard, brought the 3,500-year-old shroud out of Egypt; the mummy, Ankh Hor, came from Sandringham, where it appears to have had an interesting past…”
The Narthex wing of the RC cathedral was opened in March 2010, providing a new venue for conferences, community groups and school visits.
