A legal agreement has been drawn up to allow a sports pavillion with 10 football pitches to be built. Work should start early next month on the development on playing fields at The Hewett School.
The five-a-side pitches will become a new amenity for the area, for use by both the school and the local community. Since gaining planning permission, the developers, Goals Soccer Centres, have been working with the City Council towards signing a legal agreement. The documentation is being finalised and should be completed within the next fortnight.
The plans represent a £2.5m investment at no cost to Hewett School or the County Council. Goals Soccer Centres will pay an annual rent to the school and pay for all of the running costs. They will also be responsible for fully maintaining the facilities.
Goals Soccer Centres are supported by Sport England and the Football Association and have already opened 31 centres most of which are in partnerships with schools and local authorities. The Third Generation or 3G pitches can be used in all weathers.
The developers hope to have the centre built by the end of 2010 and open to the public early in the new year.
