Call for more Sunday opening in Lanes

Rounding off 4 days of events in the city, there had been worries that fewer people would turn out to the Norwich Lanes Summer Fayre this year. But in fact it was busier than ever, with hundreds of people strolling the length of St Benedicts in the summer sun. The street was shut to traffic and lined with stallholders and hot food sellers against a backdrop of live music.

One of the organisers, Fabio Dos Santos said: “The Lanes Summer Fayre has never been on the same weekend as The Lord Mayor’s Procession before but it’s been very hectic. Our organisation is getting better each time and we’re planning for it to be even bigger and better next year.”

Now in its third year, The Lanes Summer Fayre draws people into the Norwich Lanes area where dozens of independent retailers trade. They range from Jarrolds, who’ve been trading independently since to 1823 to smaller boutiques, bars and shops.

The organisers would like to see more of the shops opening regularly on Sundays, rather than just once a year for the fayre. They see the fayre’s success at attracting Sunday shoppers as proof they could all benefit if they opened all weekend.

The Norwich Traders Association also organise a Norwich Lanes Winter Fayre, which includes food and craft stalls and entertainment as part of the area’s Christmas celebrations.
