Occupy Norwich, who’ve had a camp in the city centre throughout the winter have been offered an alternative by the council – if they agree to take down their tents.
The group of anti-capitalism protesters are part of the worldwide Occupy Movement which has seen camps erected in cities across the world, including outside St Paul’s in London. Occupy Norwich moved onto Haymarket in October 2011 supported by a core group of around a hundred members, some camping overnight.
But the group were served with an eviction notice by the city council last week and sought legal advice over their position.
Yesterday the city council met with some of the group, looking to find a way forward, without resorting to further legal action.
A spokesman for Norwich City Council said: “Although the matter remains in the hands of our solicitors, we very much want them to leave voluntarily. We are willing to offer the protesters the use of a stall at the front of Hay Hill for two days a week, subject to existing bookings. However, this will depend on them ceasing their unlawful occupation and clearing the site of all the tents and structures.”
According to the group’s Facebook page, the group will take down their tents this Saturday.
