Hundreds of people are expected to turn out for a rally in Chapelfield Gardens this weekend. Campaigners against cuts to public services and jobs will march through the city.
Organised by the Norfolk Coalition Against The Cuts (NCAC), the rally will start in Chapelfield Gardens at 12pm. The coalition oppose plans for thousands of public sector job losses in the county. They’re pressing MPs for a levy on bankers’ bonuses; cuts in military spending; action to create ‘green’ jobs and the collection of billions of pounds of unpaid tax, as alternatives to the cuts.
Organisers expect many students to join the march, angered by government plans to raise university fees and to scrap the Education Maintenance Allowance. They also expect other employees such as carers, postal workers and librarians to march with them through the city centre.
One of the event’s organisers, Jo Rust said: “This will be our biggest event so far. The campaign is growing as more people realise there is a realistic alternative to the proposed cuts and the misery they would cause”. NCAC are confident of a high turn out even in cold weather or snow.
Karen Michael, a Norfolk UNISON representative said: “I will be marching against the 3000 involuntary redundancies that the County Council intends to impose on its loyal staff who turned it into a 4-star authority.” Speakers include representatives from National Union of Teachers, Communication Workers Union, the GMB Union as well as political parties.
