All eyes will be on south Norwich when it comes to the next general election.

For Labour to do well nationally, the party needs to win seats like Norwich South back from the Liberal Democrats.

A shortlist has been drawn up, which includes the former drummer from Blur, a BBC political reporter and a local councillor.

Members of the Labour Party in south Norwich will get to hear from the four candidates who’ve made it through to the shortlist. An informal hustings will be held at the end of October in Lakenham, ahead of a formal hustings at CNS school in November.

In the running are the former drummer from the band, Blur, Dave Rowntree, who has been active on the local political scene locally. Standing against him are Clive Lewis, a political reporter with BBC East and local councillor, Victoria McDonald who represents Labour in Lakenham. The fourth candidate is Joe Goldberg, who stood against David Cameron in the last election.

Commenting on Twitter, Dave Rowntree said: “I’m thrilled and honoured to be on the Norwich South shortlist in the esteemed company of @clivelewis01 @joegoldberg and @CllrVickyMD.” Joe Goldberg tweeted: “Really honoured to have been shortlisted 4 Norwich South. This is about taking the fight to Simon Wright and the Lib Dems.” Councillor Victoria McDonald (Labour, Lakenham) tweeted a link to a blog post: “Why the Norwich South Selection matters to me”

All four candidates will have a period of campaigning, where they will speak to local members before a candidate for Norwich South is picked. Comedian Eddie Izzard had been mentioned as a contender for the position ahead of the shortlist being drawn up, but party officials today would not comment.
