Julia Donaldson, author of over 100 children’s books, including the international best-seller, The Gruffalo, was at Norwich’s Millennium Library this morning, where children from St John’s Infants performed two poems written by the author.
The Year 2 performance caused the Children’s Laureate to well up: “I’ve been visiting libraries for 15 years but I’ve never had a moment like this… I expect you spent a long time practising that. I don’t think I can really compete..!”
The pupils went on to sing with the author, and work on a performance of her very first book, ‘A Squash and a Squeeze.’ As Children’s Laurete, Julia Donaldson’s role over the next two years will be promoting reading, and encouraging more families to use libraries.
Former Children’s Laureates include Quentin Blake (1999-2001), Anne Fine (2001-2003), Michael Morpurgo (2003-2005), Jacqueline Wilson (2005-7), Michael Rosen (2007-2009), Anthony Browne (2009-11.)
From 2.45 today she will be at a public book signing of her new book ‘The Highway Rat’ at The Book Hive on London Street.
