A local family have given Christ Church in Eaton a gift of £40,000.

The money will go someway towards the estimated £160,000 that is needed to repair and maintain the building.

The first part of the gift has been spent on new soft furnishing for the church. The vicar, the Rev Dr Patrick Richmond said: “We are so grateful to Eileen Back and the whole family for the legacy. The cushions look and feel a huge improvement. Eileen Back served the Church for many years, helping keep it in pristine order. We hope that such acts of generosity will allow us to continue to maintain and improve Christ Church.”

The legacy will also allow a cross at the top of the church to be replaced, damaged during last year’s freezing weather, and help fund repair of the ageing flint work and buckling windows in the West of the church, estimated to cost over £30,000.

Last year £80,000 worth of repair work was carried out on the church, despite being the target of lead thieves.
