As the UK starts to look forward to the London Olympics in 2012, a host of sports are on offer in Norwich this weekend. One local school made this film to make the children consider the Olympic ideals.
Ten schools made mini documentaries, focusing on the 7 Olympic values: courage, determination, excellence, friendship, respect, equality and inspiration. Children at The Clare School on South Park Road filmed their Olympic pledges against a green screen backdrop. The schools were aided by virtual technology artist Paul Strickland, in a project devised and managed by Norfolk County Council’s Children’s Services. Their film will be shown in full on The Big Screen outside Chapelfield this weekend.
Starting tomorrow, sports students and staff from City College Norwich will be joining the London 2012 Open Weekend celebrations with an urban triathlon. People will be able to try out the Watt bikes used by the British Olympic Cycling Team as a training aid and the results will be shown on the screen. Members of local sporting clubs will also be giving out information about how to join up and take up any of the activities on a regular basis.
Dick Palmer, Principal, City College Norwich said: “Our sports students and staff are looking forward to giving people the chance to try their hand at activities they might not have tried before and to take up the challenge of leading a healthier and more active lifestyle.”
A programme of cultural entertainment featuring a range of dance and martial arts will also be on display, such as hula hooping and capoeira.
Councillor Derrick Murphy, Cabinet Member for Cultural Services at Norfolk County Council, said: “Norfolk is embracing the opportunities linked to the 2012 games, and I’m delighted to see such a varied programme of events taking place during the Open Weekend.”
