Consultation has been carried out at several stages, after the idea to switch off some street lights from midnight to 5am became policy in January last year. The cost of implementing part night lighting in Norwich is £67,000, but will bring estimated annual savings of £47,000 across the city.
With one week to go, Norfolk County Council reported that just 75 people had written in. A spokesperson for the council said: “Most are objecting, mostly general concern about crime and increased accidents, although some in support. One received today was in support from someone looking forward to see the stars again, as well as saving energy.”
Any objections will be considered by the County Council, who will decide if any additional exemptions should be made. Some roads have been ruled out for reasons such as speed bumps or CCTV cameras. More detail can be found on the council’s website.
Norwich West, which includes the university and the Golden Triangle, is the next area for consultation with residents. Around 12,500 letters will go out week of 18th April 2011. The Union of UEA students are among those to object to the plans, raising concerns about student safety late at night.
