Eddie Izzard joined the Labour campaign today, giving his support to Charles Clarke’s bid to be re-elected. Speaking at the Hay Market, the comedian said: “We’ve been through a tough time, Gordon Brown has pulled us out of the recession. [...] I support the Labour Party and share their vision of the future.”
He also revealed this could be the first day of his own political career: “The trouble is you have to kill your career (as a comedian) to stand and I’ve still got stuff to do. But I am going to stand politically in ten years’ time.”
Asked what he thought of tonight’s election debate between the party leaders, he added: “I think it’s
good that it’s happening [...] People need to feel more in touch with politicians.”
Eddie Izzard was touring the region today, supporting Labour candidates in Lowestoft and Cambridge, as well as Norwich. Last summer he ran 1,000 miles around the UK - 43 consecutive marathons – raising money for Sport Relief, becoming something of a folk hero in the process.
The entertainer features in a short election film for the Labour Party.
