A community radio station based in west Norwich has become the first in the UK to be awarded an expanded licence. Test transmissions on the new frequency – 107.8 –  started yesterday, broadcasting across the city.

Future Radio began broadcasting in 2004. In that time, they’ve grown from broadcasting from a house on Earlham Road to having their own premises in Bowthorpe. Future Radio is part of Future Projects, a community based arts, media and education charity.

On Friday 2nd July, Future Radio will officially re-launch on a new frequency, 107.8 FM. The station is the first of its kind in the country to be awarded an expanded licence by Ofcom. The new frequency will give them a stronger signal, reaching a further 40,000 listeners across Norwich. Until now their licence allowed them to broadcast in the west Norwich area.

Terry Lee, the station’s breakfast presenter said he’s not concerned that they’ll lose listeners during the switch over: “The hype machine is well and truly underway. The test transmissions have started, and we’re encouraging listeners to switch over already.”

Over 160 volunteers are active with the station, ranging from 16 to over 70.
