It’s emerged that a raid on a Norwich brothel last month took place on Avenue Road.  3 arrests were made in connection with human trafficking and the running of a brothel.  The premises were then closed down.

Police raided premises across the East, including the brothel in the Golden Triangle, as part of the operation co-ordinated by the Serious and Organised Crime Agency. 7 people were arrested in total on July 21st, as part of a police crackdown on organised people trafficking and prostitution.

3 people were arrested in connection with human trafficking and the running of a brothel following the raid on Avenue Road. A 24-year-old man and 23-year-old female arrested in relation to the Norwich raid will answer bail on Tuesday 31st August. A 39 year old male also arrested will answer bail on Monday 6th September.

Further details, including a precise address, won’t be released by police unless charges are brought. Suffolk Police, who lead the investigation, gave this definition: “A brothel is a place resorted to by persons of opposite sexes for the purpose of illicit intercourse, although it is not necessary that the women using the premises are common prostitutes or that payments are made to them.”

Residents on Avenue Road have spoken of their surprise at learning that an illegal brothel operated there. One woman who collects for Christian Aid in that area said the majority of homes along Avenue Road are student houses, adding: “I guess you never know what goes on”.

A spokesperson for Norfolk Police added this statement: ”Norfolk Constabulary takes a hard line against the sexual exploitation of women.  Our Safer Neighbourhood Teams also work closely with partner agencies to tackle anti-social behaviour linked to prostitution in those communities where it is raised as a concern. However, we do have to work within the confines of the law which does not prohibit prostitution per se but rather the keeping or management of a brothel(two or more prostitutes working together) or for a prostitute to solicit for business in a street or public place. Concerns can be raised with your local Safer Neighbourhood Team by calling 0845 456 4567.”
