From bookstore to restaurant: new Italian due to open in June 2012.

The designs have been drawn up for one of Norwich’s newest restaurants.

The interior of the former bookstore, Waterstones, in the Royal Arcade will be converted into a ‘Jamie’s Italian’. Du Boulay Contractors Ltd will start the 3 month re-fit in early March, turning the three-storey building into one of the TV chef’s Italian chain. There are 24 Jamie’s Italian restaurants across the UK, with a further two in Dubai and Sydney.

As the Royal Arcade is a Grade II ListedĀ Building, designed by architect George Skipper in 1899, the exterior of the building can’t be altered.

The restaurant should bring over 100 jobs to the city, seen as a vote of confidence in Norwich. According to designer Richard Cohen, who’s worked on the layout of over 15 restaurants in the chain: “Recruitment is usually done via the website where notices of the up and coming restaurants are listed in the first few weeks of the fit out.”

Many staff at Waterstones faced redundancy when the bookstore closed last month. A sign on the door points customers towards their London Street store or online.

Ah yes – that’s something we’re working on. Think its a plug-in we can add.

Stunning property however it seems like a strange place to have a restaurant , perhaps there focus is day time shoppers popping in for a day time bite to eat ?

This could be great for other bars and food places in the area .
