The entire year-seven group have made lanterns out of paper and willow, which will be mounted on poles and carried through the city. The candle-lit procession, which includes stilt walkers and a choir, leaves from the Great Hospital, Bishopgate at 6.15pm, along Cathedral Close, Queen Street, London Street and Gentlemans Walk – arriving at City Hall for the main city centre switch-on and firework burst at 7pm – which this year will be switched on by former Canaries star Dion Dublin.
Hewett School’s Director of Creative Arts & Technology Faculty, Peter Jay said; “This has been a wonderful project for the students to work on. They are really excited about being involved in the procession.”
From approximately 6.45 to 7pm in front of City Hall there will be a fire performer, an inflatable snowball fight and a children’s Christmas theme fancy dress competition.
Also tomorrow night from 5 until 9pm – The ‘Norwich Lanes’ are holding a street fair on Upper St Giles which includes a Christmas market; choirs; street theatre; the Christmas tree trail; seasonal mulled wine and mince pies and some Ukulele Elves.
The Christmas Tree trail includes 21, individually designed, 7.5ft high wooden Christmas trees.
Families are being encouraged to follow the trail, collecting stamps as they go. Local artists have been painting, sculpting and crafting to create individual designs that range from fun and quirky to simple and striking.
Stefan Gurney, Norwich City Centre Partnership Manager, said: “The event is a true example of partnership working in Norwich. The Tree Art Trail has been organized by Norwich City Centre Partnership as part of NORWICHRISTMAS. All the wooden templates for the trees have been provided by Chapelfield Shopping Centre with prisoners from Norwich prison building the wooden trees. Norwich Arts Centre have delivered the project with local artists.”
