A debate about the pros and cons of GM food is being staged in Norwich this month.

It’ll be a chance to hear both sides of the argument from Norwich scientists and campaigners against genetically-modified food.

Chaired by Anna Hill from BBC Radio 4′s ‘Farming Today’, the debate will be held at the John Innes Centre later this month.

The only GM crop trial currently being conducted in the UK is in Norwich, where scientists are seeking to establish if a GM potato, resistant to late blight, can be developed to reduce the amount of fungicide spraying.

Opponents of the research claim it isn’t needed as there are viable alternatives.

The Great Norfolk Food Debate is tackling this contentious issue and debating the motion that: ”Farmers should have the choice to grow, and consumers the choice to eat GM foods”

Speaking against the motion will be Peter Lundgren and Dr Richarda Steinbrecher, while arguing in favour will be Professor Cathie Martin from the John Innes Centre and Eric Ward from The Sainsbury Laboratory.

The event opens at 7pm on Wednesday 28th September at the John Innes Centre on Norwich Research Park. Attendance is free but places must be reserved by emailing dawn.barrett@nbi.ac.uk

Earlier this summer, campaigners against GM foods marched on the Research Park, arguing the trial should stop.
