Businesses are being encouraged to create a carnival atmosphere when cycling’s Tour of Britain arrives next month. 70 000 people are estimated to line the route, according to the county council.

The idea is to create a colourful race day when the Tour comes to town. On September 16th the Norfolk leg of the tour will begin in King’s Lynn, head through Norwich with a sprint up Grapes Hill, before finishing in Great Yarmouth.

Businesses don’t need to be on the route to take part, but the best display – of a shop window, reception or even a car park - will be awarded £1000 by Norfolk County Council. A pack is available which has colourful posters, images of the Tour, and 9 metres worth of blue, red and white bunting.

Derrick Murphy, Norfolk County Council’s Cabinet member for Cultural Services, said: “We estimate that by hosting the Tour of Britain in Norfolk we will bring around £1.5 million into our local economy, through tourism revenue and knock-on spend to a number of related trades. For businesses directly on the route the opportunities are even greater, as there will be a television company recording the race, with the highlights package broadcast in over 100 countries around the globe.”

Businesses interested in taking part can call 01603 224471 or email marketing@norfolk.gov.uk . A photo of their display will need to be submitted by Thursday September 9 to enter the competition.
