Two new exhibitions open at the Sainsbury Centre today. “Unearthed” is a display of over 100 figurines, including a controversial Goddess found at Grimes Graves. Meanwhile in the upper gallery an exhibition of Henry Moore textiles will run until the end of August.
The Grimes Graves Goddess, on loan from the British Museum, is on public display for the first time in 50 years. Some doubt surrounds the authenticity of the figurine which was discovered in 1939 and was believed to be one of only 3 human shaped objects unearthed dating from Neolithic Britain.
The 2nd exhibition which also opens today, displays textiles by Henry Moore. The textiles date back to the Second World War, when Moore was first commissioned to make fabric designs. Anita Feldman, exhibition curator said: “Henry Moore is best known for his monumental sculpture and visitors to his studio and home at Perry Green are often astonished to discover that the artist also worked on an intimate scale.”
