Plans for Norwich to open one of the first University Technical Colleges in the country won’t go ahead this September.

City College Norwich had been asked to prepare to open this year, after an outline plan gained ministerial approval.

If Norwich is successful in beating off competition to open one of the first University Technical Colleges in the country, it would now open the new campus in September 2012 at the earliest.

The University Technical College would offer places for 600 young people, combining practical and academic study and specialising in technical studies for 14-19 year olds. Employers such as Lotus Cars, May Gurney and Adnams all support the plan. Local businesses would help shape what is taught, so that students develop the skills and qualifications needed by the industry.

A possible site for the University Technical College has been identified on an industrial estate in south Norwich but the bid still needs to go through another round before the plans can go ahead.
