One of the oldest scout units in the country wants to build a new HQ in Lakenham.

Formed over a century ago, 1st Norwich Sea Scouts has benefited thousands of young people in that time.

By replacing their HQ, they hope to be able offer even more to the local community.

The 1st Norwich Sea Scouts want to be hub of activity, not just for the 120 Sea Scouts, Cubs and Explorers but also for local schools and community groups.

The planning approval for the new HQ building states it must be built from ‘sustainable’ materials. To comply with the approval it will have as small a carbon footprint as possible, be timber framed and clad with cedar. The grassed area at the back of the current HQ will remain largely unchanged allowing activities including a place to pitch tents, climbing wall, camp fire pit and access to the river for boating and canoeing. A new lift allows safe access for disabled people to canoes and rowing boats from the new quay heading.

Applications to over 100 trusts and foundations have been made so far in their efforts to raise the £400,000 needed to build the new HQ. Jane Stafford, who is co-ordinating the fundraising for the Sea Scouts said: “By this time next year, we’d like to be well on our way with the new build.” Almost half the amount needed for the project has been raised so far.
