Details of how Earlham Police Station will be demolished to make way for a £2 M police deployment base, will be discussed by the city council this week.

Up for discussion is whether to allow the existing building on the corner of Earlham and Colman Roads to be bulldozed, along with 3 residential properties. It would be replaced by a police operation deployment base which would house 3 Safer Neighbourhood Teams: West Centre; Earlham/Marlpit/Larkman; University and Eaton.  The scheme also has a facility for an ambulance sub station.

Some concerns were raised by local residents about car parking. Some were worried that there would be insufficient visitor parking, causing people to park on Earlham Road. These issues have been looked at and the site has provision for 18 cars, 4 motorcycles, 2 ambulances as well as secure cycle storage for 16 bikes.

If approved by councillors, work could begin by the summer. There’s a chance that a new Government could alter the current budget approved for Norfolk Police, but according to Norfolk Police Authority there are currently sufficient funds to carry out the project, due be completed by mid 2011.
