A supermarket chain is transforming one of its Unthank Road stores. The East of England Co-operative Society, which owns 3 outlets on Unthank Road is moving its wine store, Le Chateau, into the supermarket building near Tesco.
Plans for the existing Le Chateau building on the corner of Onley Street have yet to be confirmed. Their Onley Street supermarket was also renovated last month.
In an interview in March, the retailer admitted it needed to “up its game”, opting to invest in Unthank Road, following the arrival of Tesco last summer.
David, that’s ridiculous. The Co-Op is fighting back but its only alternative was probably to leave altogether, a shameful outcome. Other, smaller traders may not have the financial clout to do so (something Tesco no doubt rely upon). Does making weaker rivals “up their game” make the bullying OK? Weird, weird logic. What if Tesco move into an area where most rivals can’t respond? Would you be happy to see Tesco’s store the only grocer on Unthank in place of a variety or smaller, indy traders?

So the arrival of Tesco has meant the co-op is INVESTING in Unthank road. Anyone who opposed the tesco store really should be ashamed of yourselves..
