If you’re involved in a major accident, you’ll be met by a consultant-led trauma team at the Norfolk & Norwich University hospital, no matter when it happens. The changes come into force next week …
Under the new system, once a potential trauma patient is identified as inbound to the hospital, a trauma team leader will assemble a team, ready to receive the patient. The whole trauma team will be ready and waiting in the resuscitation bay when the patient arrives. Different consultants and trauma team nurses will be asked to join the team immediately depending on the patient’s needs. The hospital hopes the changes will improve outcomes for trauma patients.
The main change is that a consultant will lead the trauma team, and the system will be in place around the clock, seven days a week. The N&N recently recruited two additional A&E consultants to provide more senior cover in the Emergency Department.
A spokesperson for the hospital said: “We’ve always had a trauma team here but it’s not always been consultant-led. We’d expect that having more senior medical and surgical input into the trauma team will improve outcomes for trauma patients.”
