Options open to GCSE students

Aug 23, 2010, 15:08pm By Claire Wood

As GSCE results come out tomorrow, the county council has drawn up a range of new courses designed specifically for 16-18 year olds. They want students to know there’s an alternative to the traditional routes open to school leavers.

‘Solutions 16-18′ is a new programme run by Norfolk County Council Adult Education Services offering a range of subjects from construction to video games design.

Courses are free of charge for those over 16 and under 19 on 31 August 2010. Eligible students can claim the Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA), which can be up to £30 a week. Some learners may be entitled to help from the county council’s Learner Support Fund for the cost of childcare, travel, books and other essential course materials.

Ann Steward, cabinet member with responsibility for adult education at Norfolk County Council, said: “If you’re one of the many young people across Norfolk who have got their GCSE results and don’t know what the future holds for you, don’t despair. If you didn’t get the grades you were expecting, haven’t been able to get into your local college or sixth form or just don’t know what you want to do next, there are still options available to you.”

“ This new programme has been designed to increase students’ opportunities, whether that’s to make yourself more employable, get started on a specific career path or prepare you to go on to further or higher education. The courses have also been designed to be flexible, with the time commitments required ranging from full-time to just a couple of hours a week, so most students should be able to fit paid work around their studies.
