The summer holidays are here but a childrens’ play area still isn’t finished, 9 months after work began.
The new play area at The Jenny Lind Park was originally due to be ready in time for Easter. As that deadline passed, the aim shifted to complete Phase 2 of the £300 000 re-development by the start of the summer holidays. But while some progress has been made, as schools break up, the workmen’s fencing is still up.
A “vision plan” for the park on Vauxhall Street was drawn up for the site with the help of local people last summer, but children have been without play equipment for far longer.
The city council say a burst water main set the project back, but now hope to complete the work by August 6th. A safety inspection will be carried out on the same day and, if the new play area passes, the site will then be open for local children to use.
A spokesperson for the council, Amy Lyall said: “Play equipment is in stock and is scheduled to be installed by contractors. Site landscaping will shortly be completed – an asphalt path will be laid, timber edging completed and completion of earth works and surfacing. We are also planning further work to finish the project by planting additional shrubs that provide sensory interest – colour, touch and smell.”
A final phase of work will begin in the autumn, which will look at aspects such as extra seating and refurbishing the Jenny Lind Play Area archway. An teenage area of the park with basketball courts and football pitches is complete and is in regular use.
