With this year’s local elections just 5 weeks away, the first big names in national politics are starting to appear in south Norwich.
Just last week, Conservative Science Minister David Willetts arrived a day after one of the good news stories to come out of the budget was announced – a £25 million investment in Norwich Research Park. The week before, Home Office minister, Theresa May was in Norwich, defending cuts to the police service budget.
And tomorrow sees the country’s first Green MP, Caroline Lucas visit south Norwich. Her tour will start at the University of East Anglia, where she’ll answer questions from students in the main square at 2pm. From there, she’ll address local residents and Green activists at Wensum Lodge, where the sports hall is threatened with closure. From 5.30pm she’ll give a public meeting at Chantry Hall on the topic of political reform. Ian Gibson, former Norwich North MP and UEA lecturer, will also be speaking at the event.
The current political make-up of Norwich City Council is Labour – 16 seats, Green – 14, Lib Dems – 5 and Conservatives 4. Just one third of the seats are up for re-election on May 5th 2011.
