Over 400 local residents are lobbying for a local primary school to turn nearby land into playing fields.

A petition will be handed in to councillors in August.

Local Green Party councillors have joined with governors from Henderson Green Primary School to lobby for a brown field site next to the school to be turned into playing fields for the school.

Green Party County Councillor, Marcus Hemsley, who has been helping the residents in their campaign, said: “I am delighted with the response and support from local residents to this campaign. The money for school play areas is available and we would like to see some of this spent on our local school”. Councillor Hemsley will be submitting a petition to the Norwich County Council meeting in August, with a request to allow the school to have the use of the land that was bought by the County Council with the intention of being used for playing fields.

School governor Claire Smith said “Henderson Green Primary School is in a very deprived area, and the children at the school deserve and need to have a playing field space. They only have a very small area of grass at the back of the school, and this area of land is just sitting next to the school not being used for anything. The children here would benefit immensely from having this land as a playing field space”.

The petition is available online.
