Questions over quality of car park

Resurfacing work has finally begun on large potholes outside Earlham House shops, following a three year campaign. Over seven hundred people signed a petition to improve the car park. But questions have been raised over the quality of the work.

Charles Clarke, MP (Lab) led the campaign for improvements to the Earlham House shops. He wrote to the Government Minister asking what powers local councils have to tackle absentee landlords, and encouraged the city council to take action. A Section 215 notice was served on the landlord of Earlham House shops, giving a deadline of 8th February 2010 to act.

The Green Party held their first “open surgery” at Earlham House shops today. As they talked to local people, resurfacing work began on the car park, which has been in a poor condition for many years. Local councillor Adrian Ramsay, who’s standing in the general election hoping to become the country’s first Green MP, expressed his concerns: “I was expecting proper re-tarmacing and a more thorough job. I’m concerned that it won’t be sturdy enough as people start to drive over it. I will be asking the council why it wasn’t re-tarmaced.”  The remainder of the car park should be resurfaced in a month’s time.

The Green’s are focusing their efforts on three key constituencies in the forthcoming general election; Norwich, Brighton and Lewisham/Deptford. They plan to leaflet 46,000 homes in Norwich South in the run up to the election. Adrian Ramsay says: “This is the first stop on our “Listening Tour”. I am working hard to meet as many residents as I can before the election. We believe the result here will be very close.”
