Kicking off with a tournament in Eaton Park this Saturday, Rounders UK want to set up Norwich’s first community club for the sport. Taster sessions will also be on offer for anyone who wants to take part.

Organised by the governing body for the sport of Rounders in the UK, Rounders England, the community rounders tournament starts at 11 am this Saturday.  The rounders activities are split into two main sessions – a mixed tournament for pre-registered teams, followed by an afternoon taster session open to the whole community from 1.30pm.

The tournament aims to be a fun, nine-aside competition and for mixed or all female teams. Three teams have entered so far: Hellesdon Belles, Thoroughbreds and Sparks.

The taster session, from 1.30 pm will consist of introductory coaching to batting, bowling and fielding, and finishing with small sided games. It’s free to anyone who would like to give it a go.

From next Thursday evening (26th August 2010) a 6 week rounders course will be available for over 16s, with a view to setting up Norwich’s first Rounders Club. While traditionally heavily played in the North of England, Rounders UK are hoping to generate interest in the sport here in the East. Beth Wild, the regional development officer said: “The overall objective behind the Rounders in the Park event on Saturday, and subsequent Get Back Into Rounders Project is to establish a new community Rounders club in Norwich – which will include an adult and junior section.”

In June this year Active Norfolk helped to deliver the first ever UKCC L1 Rounders coaching course in the county, which has created a new team of qualified Rounders coaches across Norfolk to enable the delivery of projects and events.

This Saturday’s event will be held on a marked out pitch between the boating lake and the Skatepark. The Thursday sessions are free and run from 17.30-18.30. Book online  or call Shelley Starkings at Active Norfolk on 01603 697024.
