The comedian Ruby Wax, who’s appearing in a sell-out show at Norwich Playhouse tomorrow, is raising the profile of mental illness as she tours. She’s backing a local campaign to encourage people to talk about mental health, while they get their hair cut.
Ruby Wax is among a number of celebrities who’re backing a campaign for more openness around mental illness. The Time to Change (TTC) campaign, gets funding from Comic Relief and the Big Lottery Fund. It wants to inspire people to work together to end the discrimination surrounding mental health. They say the stigma and ignorance surrounding mental health causes misery for people who suffer mental health problems, and their families. Trisha Goddard and Frank Bruno are among those who’ve signed up to support the campaign.
Ruby Wax said: “I’m pledging to talk openly about about my mental health issues and to help get people talking about the “M” word. Mental health problems are so common, it could be anyone. The trouble is no-one wants to talk about it.”
Locally, the Norfolk and Waveney Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust are working to spread the word. They’re recruiting hairdressers and barbers who’ll promote the TTC campaign, and encourage people to talk about mental health issues. Information about the campaign will be available in the foyer at Norwich Playhouse tomorrow night. They’d like people to pick up a leaflet to take to their next hairdresser’s appointment. Hoollovoo on Pottergate are among the salons who have signed up for the campaign.
