City College has stated its commitment to world class training for energy, engineering and advanced manufacturing, despite missing out on a bid to open a University Technical College.

The Department for Education today told the College that its University Technical College (UTC) application will have to wait until the next bidding round, for opening in September 2013, following a “competitive” application process for UTCs to open in September 2012.

Principal Dick Palmer said: “The continued development of the energy, advanced manufacturing and engineering sectors in Norfolk represents a huge opportunity for the local and regional economy.  Ensuring we have the skills and training infrastructure in place to support the growth of these sectors, so that skilled jobs can go to local people, remains a top priority for the College and our partners.”

He added: “City College Norwich, supported by UEA, put in a really strong bid for a Norfolk UTC, which had the backing of leading local employers[...]We now need to consider what the impact is of moving into the next round of bids, for a September 2013 start.”

As reported previously, University Technical Colleges offer 14-19 year olds vocational courses, sponsored by a university or college of further education.
