Shoppers plan to boycott Tesco

After years of controversy, the new Tesco Express opens on Wednesday on Unthank Road.

During the building works, there’s been anger from local traders, and last week a notice was served after planning permission was breached.

Some local people, who’ve opposed the store from the start, say they won’t shop there.

The ribbon will be cut to officially open the Tesco Express store by the manager of the Break’s Unthank Road charity shop, who will benefit from a £500 cheque. The money is a token of Tesco’s “commitment to supporting the local community.”

Last week, Tesco revealed that they had had 200 applicants for the 17 jobs at the store. Store Manager Richard Jordan said: “I was overwhelmed by the huge response we received to our recruitment drive.”

But many local people say they’ll boycott the store on principle. Hundreds attended a public inquiry which eventually saw Tesco gain planning permission to build the store, despite concerns about the impact it will have on existing shops and on traffic. Sue Johns, who lives locally said: “I won’t be shopping there, and I know lots of other people who won’t shop there either.”

The new Tesco Express store will be open from 6am – 11pm, seven days a week.
