South Norwich News grows

Mar 21, 2011, 11:58am By Claire Wood

Today marks a significant step for South Norwich News as we start work on a new section of the website.

We’re aiming to build a guide for anyone who wants to get a community initiative off the ground. If you know of a project we should include, get in touch.

As a hyperlocal news site, we’re in a great position to give publicity to community projects in south Norwich. Through winning funding from a national charity, we can now extend this by helping groups find their way through the bureaucracy and red tape.

Unltd, who fund social entrepreneurs, have awarded us a grant to build a new section of South Norwich News. It has the working title of a “Community Toolkit.” By this we mean a resource that helps people understand the huge changes afoot at a local level, including The Big Society and devolved powers through the Localism Bill.

We’re looking for case studies to feature which help explain the stumbling blocks and rewards of getting a local project started. Grapes Hill Community Garden is a prime example of a project that’s coming to fruition after years of work, while Hot Source, a digital networking group are another example of local people working together towards a common goal.

To help research and write this section, we’ve taken on our first paid intern for 2011, a graduate found via the UEA’s Project Evolve.

If you’re involved with a community project you’d like to share from the south Norwich area, email us: editor@southnorwichnews.co.uk. Our new section should be built and ready for use by June 2011.

Very good news re the Community Toolkit. This promises to be an excellent resource for our area, and an exciting new development for SNN. Good luck.
