A national charity has awarded South Norwich News funding to develop the site.
The funding will help us prove small hyperlocal sites are a viable alternative to the established media.
We’re looking for an intern and will be adding a “community toolkit” to the site.
UnLtd is a charity who fund social entrepreneurs. Their aim is to help socially-minded people “share, shape and use social insight to generate a greater positive impact in the real world”. South Norwich News has been awarded a Better Net Award by The Foundation for Social Entrepreneurs and the Nominet Charitable Foundation.
Other examples of winners are a project at Tuckswood Primary School, where pupils were introduced to the world of work.
We’ve been awarded £2000 to build a “community toolkit” to help communities in south Norwich get projects off the ground. It’ll guide people through local government bureaucracy, as well as helping them lobby for funding.
A good example of this is a local Pre-School who’ve been working for months to secure a new building. St Peter’s Pre-School on Park Lane will learn on Monday if they can move, or whether their project will be delayed due to council budget cuts. To get this far, the pre-school needed help to understand how local government works and who to contact for funding. We will provide a guide for future groups like St Peter’s.
Our other key aim is to help develop the commercial side of South Norwich News, so that other journalists can look to us as a viable alternative to the established media. Many large organisations like the BBC and Anglia TV have made journalists redundant in recent years. UnLtd is helping fund us, as we are potentially “recession-busting”, giving out-of-work journalists the option to set up a hyperlocal site where they live.
Fantastic news about the funding. This will give people in our community a real opportunity to make a difference at a local level. (And so much more tangible / worthwhile than signing-up to yet another facebook campaign). Look forward to following progress on the ‘toolkit’ – good luck !

Very well deserved and many congratulations. Nice to have some good news about the News Media for a change, and all the better that it’s happening locally.
