A BBC documentary goes to air tonight, which looks into the mystery which surrounds 17 people found buried beneath Chapelfield.

Forensic science is used to shed light on the case, which dates back to the early 1200.

When the remains of 17 people – men, women and 11 children, one as young as two years old – were discovered in a dry well shaft in Norwich city centre, it raised questions about who the people were and what happened to them.

The bodies were unearthed when Chapelfield Shopping Centre was built 7 years ago. Local archaeologists have been piecing together how the 17 skeletons died for the History Cold Cases series, examining DNA and carbon dating techniques.

According to the producers, it becomes: “a case of suspected medieval murder but the final reveal of the identity of these people is an even bigger shock to all involved”.

History Cold Cases is at 9pm tonight on BBC2.
