Time for solar panels on City Hall?

Norwich’s Green Party are lobbying for solar panels to be installed on City Hall, arguing the large flat roof is a prime site.

They say the council would receive an income from selling the energy produced, as well as saving money on its own fuel bills.

At a budget meeting tomorrow night, Green Party councillors will suggest spending £250,ooo of the council’s £5 million pound capital fund on solar panels for the roof of City Hall and other buildings used by the council. The government offers a feed-in tariff which would allow the council to be paid for energy it produced.

Councillor Stephen Little, (Green, Town Close) said: ”City Hall is an iconic building, but its maintenance and running costs are high. It would be a wasted opportunity for the council not to take advantage of the opportunity to create an income stream, save money and reduce it’s carbon footprint all at the same time.”

In the past, the ruling Labour party have dismissed the idea of investing in more solar energy as unrealistic, especially at a time when budgets are tight. The full council will meet tomorrow night to set the budget for the coming year.
