A man who vandalised Norwich’s entire fleet of rubbish trucks with a hammer has today been sentenced to 9 months in prison.
46 year old Phillip Powley, from Devonshire Street, was arrested and charged with criminal damage, after 21 rubbish trucks were put out of action in May.
Norwich Crown Court heard how he had been sacked earlier in the day, and had returned to the depot on Mile Cross with a claw hammer. While the manager of the depot called police, he attacked every rubbish truck , smashing front lights, wing mirrors and windscreens. The damage is estimated at £44,000, with further costs incurred to pay to hire replacement vehicles and to pay overtime.
Staff at the Biffa Municipal depot worked through the night to repair the vehicles. Philip Powley’s actions left staff “stunned” and delayed normal rubbish collections until the fleet were roadworthy.
Judge O’Brien sentenced Phillip Powley to 9 months in prison.
