The public is being asked to help track the local butterfly population. Conservationists warn many native species are in serious decline. On Sunday, help is on hand to identify butterflies at an all-day event in Eaton Park. This weekend’s event ties in with Saving Butterflies Week. The charity, Butterfly Conservation, recognise local parks have an important role to play in encouraging butterflies and moths to thrive in an urban environment. Information will be available about butterflies and moths, as well as suggestions for plants which may attract them to gardens.
The online Big Butterfly Count aims to gain a better understanding of which species are in need of most help. Butterfly Conservation is inviting adults and children to spend 15 minutes in gardens, fields or parks all this week until Sunday 1st August and make a record of the butterflies and day-flying moths that they see.
The organisers hope the survey will help build up a better picture of the fortunes of the country’s butterflies, and give an indication of the wider health of countryside and nature. The event in Eaton Park runs from 10am-5pm.
