Time to tackle accident blackspot

Jul 13, 2011, 07:00am By Claire Wood

Last year, a man in his mid-70s pulled out of a side street onto Earlham Road on his bike.

The driver of a car, heading out of Norwich, failed to spot him in time. He later died in hospital from his injuries.

During the inquest into his death, it struck me maybe it’s time for local people to tackle this issue head-on.

Music to babies’ ears

Jun 17, 2011, 13:36pm By Didi Briggs

I was surprised to read in the newspaper recently that one in five expectant parents is unaware of the need to talk to their baby.

As Chair of the local Pre-School Music Association (PRESMA), I’d argue there’s a strong case that music helps communication from a very early age. Read More…

Election night: could Norwich go green?

May 04, 2011, 13:29pm By Claire Wood

As it stands, Labour run Norwich City Council with 16 of the 39 seats.

But the Green Party have made gains in Norwich in every election for the past ten years. With 14 seats, they’re confident of winning at least one more.

The cost of losing £2 million

Apr 28, 2011, 19:17pm By Mark Hughes

City College UCU Branch is bitterly disappointed by City College’s announcement that 87 jobs will be lost.

The College has to reduce its costs by approximately £2 ½ million, which in effect means taking £2 ½ million pounds out of the local economy and pushing people into unemployment.

Investment is needed in education and training, not cuts. Read More…

I am sure this week’s newspaper headlines will be about how Universities are going to be forced into attracting more “working class” students into Higher Education.

I’d argue institutions like City College are already providing Higher Education courses for the future workforce in Norfolk.

Is Norwich really riddled with tunnels?

Feb 01, 2011, 13:20pm By Matthew Williams

Bus, Earlham Rd. Norwich

Ever since a large red bus fell into a hole in Earlham Road in 1988, and actually for years before that, subterranean Norwich has been associated in many people’s minds with underground chalk workings.

You only have to google to find accounts of ancient secret passageways criss-crossing beneath the city linking various landmarks.

As a local geologist, I’d argue we need to separate tunnel myth from tunnel reality. Read More…

Spotlight on women’s health

Jan 25, 2011, 12:54pm By Kathy Webb

After a difficult pregnancy and after talking to other women about their own health, I realised I wanted to do something to help women feel better about themselves.

As a result I launched Life After Birth, for women who don’t feel their minds and bodies have quite slotted back in the way they should after giving birth.

Now I’m widening this out to include all women, through “The Holistic Hub”.

Regular events will be staged locally, giving women a chance to access a wide range of advice and support. Read More…
