Labour running city hall has already seen Norwich through the worst of the recession. Coalition cuts now threaten vital services. Nobody denies the public sector has to help deal with the deficit, but Labour opposes cutting support for vulnerable people, street lights, day centres and funds to create jobs. It is not public sector workers who caused the recession – it is the banks.
Labour has taken Norwich to the forefront of achievement – into the final four for UK City of Culture, and the top ten of affordable house builders. Our recovery is being used as an example of how it should be done. Even our opponents have acknowledged our success.
Labour has led the council, come up with the ideas and been willing to be held accountable with no significant contribution or challenge from other political parties whatever they may try to pretend. In fact no other party has any experience of taking the tough decisions needed for our future and their manifestos lack any suggestion they know how to manage the city in the tough times ahead.
We have cut spending substantially without cutting services or creating major job losses. At the same time many areas have improved –we have almost tripled recycling and new food waste collection is imminent. We take pride the war memorial revamp is almost complete and the skate park is open and thriving.
We worked closely with neighbouring councils and across party divides on plans for future jobs, homes, infrastructure and prosperity. They are now being dismantled by coalition policies. It will take Labour’s proven, tough and experienced team to fight the Norwich case in these tough times.
We have built confidence that has attracted investment and enhanced our reputation – Norwich is being noticed. Now is not the time for woolly pledges. Our city needs a toughness, pragmatism and proven track record that only your Labour team can offer.
Steve Morphew, Labour, Leader of Norwich City Council
