On May 6th, people voted for a change in government and on September 9ththey can vote for change again. Under Labour, the City Council has been under-performing – failing to meet targets in customer service and council tax collection, for example, and in its housing service. The Liberal Democrats offer a fresh start, the chance to not only improve services but make sure you have more say in the way they are run.
“People power” is key to our thinking. Devolving budgets, opening up decision-making, allowing the public access to council information, the chance to e-petition the council and ask for decisions to be reviews – these are all ways of ensuring that local democracy has a future.
The Liberal Democrats want a better quality of life for everyone in Norwich and a sustainable way of living. We would increase the recycling rate to over 50% within two years, and encourage greater use of alternatives to the car. Besides making Norwich more pedestrian-friendly, we would work for better bus services, a faster Norwich-London rail link, improvements to cycle routes and funding for a cycle hire scheme.
We know how important it is to feel safe and comfortable where you live. We would continue to push for 20mph speed limits in the city’s residential areas and would take action on potholes and broken pavements. We pledge to clamp down on fly-tipping and graffiti as well as other forms of anti-social behaviour. And we recognise the importance of our parks and gardens: we want to look after green spaces, bringing more into community ownership.
Norwich has much to offer as a city of cultural excellence, but we also want it to achieve more economically and thus to help small and local businesses to flourish.
The Liberal Democrats offer a chance for a change: a more responsive council where you have real influence; decent services which allow you a better quality of life. Vote Liberal Democrat on September 9th.
