The headteacher of Avenue Junior School is to leave at Easter. Mark Cresswell, who took on the post just one year ago, will become head of a Suffolk middle school. The news comes as a surprise to parents, who received a letter from the school’s Chair of Governors today. The deputy head, Debbie Dismore  will become acting head, while the search for a permanent replacement begins. Mark Cresswell took over the headship from Juri Zarins in January 2009, under whose long-standing leadership the school attained a good Ofsted report in September 2008. Pupils were told the news in an assembly this afternoon.

Pupils at St Thomas More JuniorLocal schools have been raising money for the victims of last week’s earthquake in Haiti. At St Thomas More Catholic Junior School, they came up with the idea of wearing Hats for Haiti. So far they’ve raised over seven hundred pounds, with more still coming in, which has been sent to the charity Cafod. The aid charity for the Catholic church is working to supply water, food, medicines and shelter to the worst affected areas.  The school will be given with an award for their fundraising, which will be presented to around thirty children during this Friday’s One Show on BBC1. The job of counting the money raised at Avenue Junior School is underway, following a non-uniform day yesterday in support of the Haitian Earthquake Disaster Fund.
